| Axelle You're so right! One of the companies in our portfolio, a food processing plant, has just been through this terrible experience; the farmers were unable to supply the products properly because of the excessive rainfall. The company failed to meet its export commitments, creating internal and external constraints as well as financial damage. It is important to combine science with agriculture, scientific and technical solutions to better prepare the base of the chain.I believe that one of the most important challenges is innovation at the bottom of the ... | |||||

| Turning sargassum crisis into economic opportunity in the Caribbean | 1 Relevance | 3 months ago | Nina Desanlis-Perrin | Circular Economy | |
| For over a decade, sargassum seaweed blooms have caused major disruptions along Caribbean coasts, impacting fisheries, tourism, and local communities, and resulting in multi-million-dollar losses. Through the EU Global Gateway Investment Agenda, the EU, Team Europe, and Caribbean partners are now working to transform this environmental challenge into jobs, cleaner coastlines, and sustainable business opportunities. At the third EU-Caribbean Global Gateway Conference on Sargassum, on the 8th of October, stakeholders from governments, private sector, academia, and international financiers explored practical solutions for collecting, processing, and valorizing sargassum. The conference marked a shift from research and pilot projects to real, scalable action. Grenada, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico committed to collect and process 660,000 tonnes of sargassum between 2026–2027: Grenada: 10,000 tonnes Dominican Republic: 150,000 tonnes Mexico: 500,000 tonnes The initiative aims to establish regional sargassum-based value chains, creating new products, stimulating local entrepreneurship, and promoting clean energy solutions. Platforms like national task forces and investment feasibility studies are supporting these efforts, ensuring sustainable, economically viable practices. By transforming sargassum from a coastal nuisance into a resource for industry and innovation, this initiative highlights the principles of a circular economy, where waste is repurposed to generate value while benefiting communities and the environment.
