With over three decades in the packaging industry—including more than a decade of hands-on work across East Africa—my journey has taken me from leading design and printing projects at a multinational packaging company to training and coaching MSMEs across the region. One truth has remained constant: many African businesses do not fail because of poor-quality products, but because their packaging fails to communicate that quality.As a packaging consultant, I empower MSMEs to compete locally and globally through training, guidance, and advocacy on packaging standards. The right packaging transforms rejection into recognition—because consumers don’t just buy products; they buy trust, identity, and experience.Your first salesperson is silent but powerfulWhen a consumer picks up your product, packaging has just three seconds to speak for you. It must:• Communicate your brand values• Comply with regulatory standards• Protect the product from damage or contaminationAcross Africa, many SMEs lose opportunities due to poor, generic packaging that leads to waste, contamination, or rejection—often over non-compliant labelling. This proves why packaging must never be overlooked.It’s not just about looks. It’s about valueEffective packaging is not only attractive; it must also be functional, sustainable, and market aligned. Take an organic herbal tea produced by women’s cooperatives in Uganda. Wrapped in low-grade plastic with no nutritional information, expiry date, or barcode, it is excluded from global markets. Redesign it with eco-friendly materials, traceability tools, and clear labelling, and it becomes shelf-ready for both local and export markets. Across the continent, we are seeing innovations in cassava starch films, recycled paper, and upcycled textile waste—solutions that reduce import dependency, strengthen sustainability stories, and enhance competitiveness.Regional solutions are emerging, but entrepreneurs must actPackaging hubs are expanding in Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Ghana, yet many entrepreneurs still undervalue packaging as a strategy. Despite challenges—high costs, limited biodegradable options, and few accredited labs—collaboration is driving progress. Through regional networks, IOPPK promotes stronger standards, builds local capacity, and trains businesses to move from improvised to market-ready solutions.A word to entrepreneursIf you are building a lasting brand:• Invest in knowledge: Choose the right materials for your product and market.• Plan early: Labels carry essential details such as weights, origin, and expiry dates.• Collaborate: Work with standards bodies, associations, and export councils.• Stay compliant: Non-compliance with GS1 barcodes or labelling rules is costly.Looking aheadAs African trade grows more regional and digital under AfCFTA, packaging will be the key differentiator. Entrepreneurs must think not only about scaling up but also about packaging up to compete.
