Seaweed farming in Latin America and the Caribbean grew 66% between 2013 and 2023, reaching 22,125 tonnes, according to a new FAO report. The findings, based on a regional workshop in Puerto Varas, Chile, highlight seaweed farming’s role in producing nutritious, low-carbon food while boosting coastal livelihoods and blue economies. Key points: Production leaders: Brazil, Chile, and Venezuela account for over 90% of regional output, mainly of Gracilaria spp. and Kappaphycus alvarezii. Challenges: Biosecurity risks, climate change, pollution, and weak regulatory frameworks. Opportunities: Diversifying species, expanding markets, using AI and biotechnology, and adopting integrated or restorative aquaculture models. Social impact: Seaweed farming can empower women and youth, strengthen community-based approaches, and provide decent jobs. Recommendations: Strengthen research, technology, and training. Improve regulations and investment. Promote equity, inclusion, and knowledge sharing. Create an international platform on seaweed to support collaboration. Overall, experts see seaweed farming as an underutilized sector with strong potential to advance food security, climate resilience, sustainability, and rural development across Latin America and the Caribbean.
