The rise of convenience: How ready-to-eat foods are reshaping the Fruits and Vegetables sector

Convenience foods are commercially prepared products designed for ease of consumption and minimal preparation, often requiring little to no additional ingredients or cooking. Ready-to-eat (RTE) foods, a broad category, include any food consumed in its raw state or processed, cooked, or prepared for immediate consumption. The rise of the ready-meal industry is driven by urbanization, fast-paced lifestyles, and changing household dynamics, with more people seeking time-saving meal solutions like ready meals. Health-conscious consumers are also fueling demand for meals catering to specific dietary needs, such as vegan, gluten-free, and low-calorie options, while growing interest in international flavors and fusion cuisines adds to the appeal. E-commerce growth and flexible work arrangements have made RTE products more accessible through online grocery platforms and food delivery services. Today, convenience foods go beyond basic utility to deliver premium quality, innovative flavors, and restaurant-like experiences. The fresh-cut fruit and vegetable sector is particularly growing, offering a viable alternative to counteract the decline in F&V consumption. As the RTE market continues to evolve with innovations in food technology, sustainable packaging, and diverse flavor profiles, it presents significant entrepreneurial opportunities, especially in developing regions where agriculture plays a key economic role. Entrepreneurs entering the RTE market must focus on innovation, technology, sustainability, and strong partnerships to succeed in this fast-growing sector.
