Rwanda is adopting precision agriculture using satellite imagery, machine learning, drones, and sensor-based systems to transform farming into a data-driven, climate-resilient, and profitable sector, according to Minister of Agriculture Mark Cyubahiro Bagabe. Previously reliant on labor-intensive field sampling, Rwanda can now monitor crop areas, growth conditions, and predict yields more accurately for crops like maize, Irish potatoes, and rice. Automated irrigation and greenhouse technologies are optimizing water and nutrient use, reducing waste and increasing efficiency. The government aims to expand irrigated land from 70,000 to 130,000 hectares by 2029, building sustainable agri-food systems nationwide. Young people are actively engaging in tech-driven agribusiness, with some even exporting drone- and sensor-based services. Bagabe emphasized that technology is no longer optional but essential for modern, climate-smart agriculture. Local agripreneurs, like Cynthia Umutoniwabo of Loopa, highlight that innovations must address real farming challenges to be viable and impactful, reinforcing the role of youth in scaling sustainable agricultural solutions.
